List no more than five to seven required qualifications — things a candidate genuinely cannot do the job without. Then list preferred qualifications separately. Federal and state employment laws prohibit asking about a candidate's age, race, religion, national origin, disability status, pregnancy, marital status, or sexual orientation. In many states you also cannot ask about salary history. Stick to questions about skills, experience, availability, and work style. If you are unsure whether a question is legal in your state, check with an employment attorney before your first interview.
Always check references before making an offer. Call previous employers or managers directly rather than relying on written references. Ask specifically: "Would you hire this person again, and why or why not?" The answer to that question tells you almost everything you need to know.
